I have a 2000 se with the five speed manual tranny....at highway speeds 70mph engine runs at 3700 rpm which is rather fuel expensive...any thoughts why

That's probably not good...
At 70mph, mine sits around 2300-2500.

It's for towing.

If you want first gear to be short enough to get 3500lb. moving up an incline without frying the clutch, and you want the gears to be reasonably closely spaced, then fifth is going to be a little on the short side. It's common for 5-speed SUVs with cammy motors.

maybe your overdrive is off?
