Bad smell after fluid swap.

Hey guys. I noticed that after driving my 95 R50 5 speed for a few minutes on the highway (heating everything up) I notice that my truck starts smelling like gear oil. After I park it and it sits for a few its really bad. I am pretty sure it's coming up through the tranny tunnel. SO I used Valvoline tranny oil (the GL-5 stuff) and changed the transfer case out with Mercon. No matter what, I cant find a leak in the tranny or gearcase yet I am smelling this pretty strong. 2 questions:
1. Do our 5 speeds have some kind of release valve on the top for pressue buildup that could release a smell? Does the gearcase?
2. Has anyone used the Valvoline with a similar problem? What ARE you guys using to replace? Redline MT90?
Thanks guys!

Did you spill some perhaps?

Check all of the seals on the transmission. I've had an issue before where I filled up my transmission, and the speed sensor was leaking. It was pretty high on the transmission, so once the fluid leaked to that level, it stopped leaking.

Is yours a manual tranny? I dont SEE any leaks but it smells exactly like it could be leaking. I DID hose the top of the tranny and some of the undercarriage down and the smell went away temporarily. Ill check the speed sensor seal I guess. I just havent noticed any fluid running down the side anywhere.

I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be the seal where the shifter goes into transmission. Had to remove shifter nobs, the plastic piece with the pleather boots, under that had to remove rubber cover. Then you can see the tranny from inside the vehicle. It is the seal directly on top of tranny.

I do not believe any loss of gear oil is a problem with that seal. Mine did not leak any oil it just smelled really bad.

Yeah I dont think mine has lost any either as I crawl underneath all the time and look and its dry as a bone everywhere. I just smell it. Thats what makes me think it's the same on mine.

Like my truck constantly smells like gear oil now. If I drive it on the highway and park it after that and come back out its REALLY bad.

Yeah that lower boot. Mine is wallowed out around the shifter to the point that I zip tied it tighter to try and seal better. I will just replace it.
