Wiring LEDs to the dome light - '99

Hey all - new member here, first non-introductory post.
I just bought a beautiful '99 Pathfinder. Everything works great, but the footwells are awfully dark at night.
The solution I would like to implement would be to get strips of LEDs and mount them underneath the dash, then wire them into the circuit that goes to the domelight. This way, the LEDs will turn on and off with the doors, and if I turn on the light from the inside.
Has anyone here done anything along these lines before?
