dust from a/c vents

I used to drive in the desert and sometimes when driving, I would get dust coming into through the a/c vents. This seems strange since the dust was not blowing on the front, it was kicking up from the back as I drove down dirt roads. Any ideas on the reason for this and how to fix it?
