The Nissan Path

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder SE 3.5 L with 130k. Every time I start my car I hear a grinding noise for 2-3 seconds. Then it goes away and everything is fine.

Ive looked around and asked around and it seems that the starter motor is engaged for too long is the general consensus.

Is there any way to easily check is this is true and any other resolutions to the said issue without replacing the starter motor?

If the starter is continuing to crank the engine after you released you key, then likely the starter solenoid is sticking and you need to replace the starter motor assy. If it grinds only when you are turning the key to the "start" position, then you could have a damaged ring gear (or flexplate, if auto trans) and would likely need a new ring gear (or flexplate) and a starter. Also, '98 R50's came with a 3.3L; the 3.5L wasn't available until the 2001 model year.

Okay, to add another twist. If I barely turn to the start position i hear no grinding at all and everything runs smoothly. Could this indicate a electrical issue?
