I've pulled the chain tensioner on my sentra and it was easy. How hard is it on the Pathi?

all the KA problems; 240, axxess, multi, altima were a simple fix - and many were no problem anyway. There have been lots of T-chain engines that are problem free, just seem that this new(ish) 4.0L has some teething pain. The QG, QR, VQ35, 45, VK, MR etc all have had no issues. No doubt it sucks to have any issues, but when you really look at it, if you had a t-belt, you could have to replace it too. When the VG's (that everyone raves about) came out, they had TONS of issues too.

i dont think if it breaks it cooks everything, i blew myn charging the grapevine into LA and the noise it made was horrid and the power was greatly reduced but it still drove.

Mine started whining at around 65K :( . I am at 90K now and it has not worsen or should I say the whining has not gotten louder. Just wondering if the problem doesn't get fixed will it cause catastrophic failure? and what exactly will happen.

I'm not a mechanic but I would feel safe saying that if you lose your timing chain flying down the highway at 70mph your motor will be toast

FYI --- Mine were replaced at around 32k -- If I recall correctly...

Lately, I am thinking more than ever these things are designed to last exactly 36,000 miles...no problems beyond that then you should be making regular trips to Vegas.

I'm at 59,6xx on my 05, every time I drive it I listen, praying to hear anything within the next 200 or so miles.

Its a HUGE job !! I just did one on an '01 Path. VQ35 ... same basic setup ... Labor time on an '06 is 9 hours ... And yea, if you get it wrong you will destroy the engine ....!!

Basically upper intake manifold, valve covers, front cover etc all have to be removed ....

The key is in oil changes .... 3000-4000 miles at the most !!

Phantom,

what were your OCI's ? Did you regulary change at 4000 miles or less? With Synthetic I know they say taht the OCI's are much longer then conventional , but perhaps that might have been a contributing factor ?

I took the Pathi in today with 59,701 miles on it for an oil change. I tried to tell them I heard a noise from the engine area and mentioned the TSB. They came back with the drive belt being garbage becuase it was a Gates belt and not a Nissan belt.

They wanted nothing to do with the auto tensioners..
