Cruise control issue

on Friday the wife and I were headed on a 100 mile trip to her parents house for the weekend. after driving down the highway a bit I went to turn on the cruise and nothing. The light came on and the set light below would flash rapidly. I tried it several time and hit all of the buttons and no change. so after we got there and unloaded the truck I went out and started the truck and everything worked. it has been working since. I don't know if washing the truck about 10 min before we left has anything to do with it or not. the temp outside was in the mid 30's. what are your thoughts on what would cause this? any one have this issue before?
