airbag release bar

I'm trying to get the silver trim pieces off my steering wheel. Directions are to push the aurbag release bar under steering wheel. I have found the little hood and pulled it and it clicked. I can't get the trim pieces off to access the torque bolts. Anybody know how to release the bar correctly bc I don't know if I did it right. I was told the trim pieces would be easily accessible. There is no room to pull the main trim piece behind top of silver accented pieces, the steering column is in the way.
