VQ40 engines and sludge

Postby Gray » Sat Jun 21, 2008 3:21 pm

I haven't heard of sludging problems in VQ40 engines but have any here taken off a valve cover and looked at that part of the engine, which is where sludging problems are usually first seen. If some amount of sludging appears to be starting what type of oil are you running in the engine and what oil change miles/hours/months have been used. Thanks.

I wonder if the TSB: NTB07-042 VQ ENGINE; BUZZING / WHINING NOISEt=d&pp=10&page=2 might be a sludge related problem tearing up the timing chain guides.

I havent heard of any problems with sludging. I dont think anyone will have sludging probs as long as the oil gets changed like its supposed to.

I run Mobil 1 in my Pfinder, I have since I bought it at 16,000 miles. I havent removed the valve cover but I do look down inside when I take the oil cap off... It looks good and clean in there. I can still see the color of the metal. Love it!

Have you heard about the trick of putting 1-qt transmission fluid in with your oil to clean your engine? Apparently, trans fluid has very high detergent properties, and it's a well known trick to substitute 1-qt of oil with trans fluid and then drive around with that mixture for a few days before changing your oil.

This procedure is apparently much safer and more effective than an engine flush.

I'm going to start doing that to my truck (18k miles), and am buying this pump from J.C. Whitney to pull-out the qt of oil so I can put in the trans fluid without crawling under the truck and draining out the oil.
