You'll have to get the short in the circuit traced and fixed. It might be in the combination switch, but without testing it, it's impossible to say for sure.

Ok.

Does the rear turn signal bulb use a dual filament bulb.?

Is the problem only when both brake and reversing lights are lit ?

If so do they both share a ground.

The next steps involve taking multimeter readings, if you don't have one please get an inexpensive one, less then $10, digital from some where like Harbor freight.

Check the plug and wires on your tow package. (The plug that connects to your trailer for brake lights etc.). Mine had shorted out on itself and was causing all kinds of electrical problems.

I noticed the black box part of it is cracked open. I was wondering about this! What do I do with it? Can I take it off completely or where all is it attached?

Just cut the wires where the plug starts and tape up each individual wire with electrical tape until you buy a new plug. I knew it was the plug shorting because with the ignition ON, the plug was hot to the touch.

You mean the plug at the back where the trailer would plug into?

Probably a bad ground

I would start looking for a bad ground. :( Start with the lighting circuits. A factory service manual is required, but they are easy to find online.
