Oil change gone horribly wrong...

It's easy to do yourself, while your under the truck you can give everything a once over and make sure everything is ok. (no leaks or check on any wear and tear items) I'm pretty sure the oil change places including the dealership don't remove the skid plate and let the oil drain all over the skid plate and frame cross member. That drives me nuts.
And the 2" lift makes it a breeze to get under the truck now.

Honestly it's not that bad after you've done it a few times...1st DIY oil change on any new or unfamiliar vehicle is always going to result in some spilled oil.
Why DIY? The 20 minutes is quicker than a dealer or lube shop and, in my opinion, less hassle. And you know what you're putting into it...a shop can tell you that they're putting in full synthetic and actually changing the filter for $30 but do you really believe it?

True!! I honestly am anal about what oil goes into my cars. I agree that getting to the oil filter is a PITA but I used to own a 2002 Lexus IS300 and the filter was hidden underneath everything and to the side of the engine.....hard to get to from either above or underneath. Almost impossible to do without having the car on a lift--definitely needed to take off all of the car's underbody plastic to get to.
Anyway, my point is that it really doesn't take that long and isn't really that hard. Maybe that's why they put the greenest guys at the shop on oil changes....

never changed the washer before and have never had any leaks.....I've been doing my own oil changes for the last 10 yrs on cars ranging from '93 Altima, '02 Pathy, '02 IS300, and now my '05 Pathy.
the only time that I developed a leak was from a dented oil pan on my IS300 (running over a tree branch--totally didn't see it until the last minute).

I buy my K&N Oil Filters on-line for less than $10 @peace and got the Drain Plug Gaskets for $0.7 @ piece on-line as well. The Pennzoil Platnum Full Synthetic I get at WalMart in 5 Qt jugs for $25. On a good day I will change it my self (cost <$36) on a bad day I let WalMart do it and I give them the oil & filter + gasket and $13.66 for the work (cost < $50). I can watch them change the oil at my WalMart and feel comfortable with their work.
i used to let the dealer do my pathfinder, but got tired of the hard sell and plus they left my drain plug loose one time...glad I caught that.
Im like Terry, I like doing my own and Autozone will take your used oil..pain I know, but I enjoy doing it.
I take the skid plate off too and then I used a plastic Glad bag to wrap around my oil filter to catch any oil. I rarely spill any oil during an oil chiange.
