Need new tire suggestions '05 Pathy LE

Hey I have a '05 Nissan Pathfinder LE. I am looking to get new tires because whoever owned my car previously decided to cheap out and put the cheapest tires they could find on it. Right now I slip badly on newly paved roads, wet roads, and can barely get out of a few inches of snow.

Here's my deal, I live in very hilly Bucks County (PA) where they don't believe in plowing during the winter. I need something that it great in the snow but also does not destroy my already low (not complaining, <3 my pathy) gas mileage. Does anyone have any suggestions?

(I do have stock rims still)

I just went through this as well with my wifes 05 LE. We got such good mileage out of the OEM's that were on it from the factory we just went ahead and put the same brand but just the best road tires they made. General HTS. We are in the south so these probably wouldn't be the best for your application but General makes great tires at a good price and do have tires for your application.

We are very happy with these new tires.

Good luck, as it is a time consuming process trying to find the right tire.

I love my Yokohama Geolandar A/T's. They are very good in the snow...and look good on the pathy.

I had a set of Firestone Destination A/Ts on my OEM rims and they were great in the snow and were pretty light for A/T tires.

Any A/T is going to whack your mpg. If you really need maximum snow traction, you can't beat dedicated snow tires. They really don't cost you more in the long run besides install cost if you don't get rims as well. I run Blizzaks on my other vehicles.

I also drive in very hilly unplowed roads but we don't usually get more than a couple inches at a time. I got along great with my Michelin LTX MS2 plus they are siped which is pretty good on ice (better than an A/T). I probably should run dedicated snow tires....but my problem is I drive very agressive when it's dry. Snow tires don't handle as well and will chew up quicker when you drive like I drive. So I sacrifice some snow/ice traction for the large percentage of days that aren't snowy. If I regularly drove in deeper snow I would have gone with an AT, probably the Michelin AT2. Michelin is about the only tires I don't burn through quickly. I've got 15k miles on them so far and have burned 2/32. Should get an easy 50-60k out of them...got 30k out of the OEM Generals.

I would look into the Goodyear Silent Armors. I had them on my 99 Jeep Grand cherokee in Utah, plenty of snow, and they did great. Quiet, and even did real well in mud. They would be a good choice.

I have the Firestone Destination AT's on mine. I drove from Pittsburgh to State College in the heart of the blizzard a few years back. I passed everything that I came across. they also do great on the boat launches in the fall and spring when all of the moss covers the ramps. I plan on buying another set before winter this year.

I have these as well, and the handled the worst of CO blizzards w/ ease this winter (including an ugly post-blizzard day over both la veta and wolf creek passes).

so +1 for yoko geo A/T-S. i have had them on in everything except deep mud and they have done great for me.

We've seen some pretty rave reviews on the Wrangler DuraTrac. I'm still running BF Goodrich Long Trail on mine and they seem to do just fine. No slipping or anything like that. I'd still like to switch to a more aggressive AT once these are ready for replacement.

The Duratracs have been good for me so far, but might be a tad overkill for phrozeinglass. I'm also giving a one thumb up for the Revos. I've had them a couple of times and they do real well in all conditions.

@goblue90 Just wondering did you notice a difference in mileage with the Firestone Destination A/Ts?

Thanks boys, I did look at the DuraTracs and they are alittle more than I can spend and I did like the reviews on the Destinations better. Thanks so much for the suggestions and I am open to more

Hey phrozeinglass, my only reference point was coming down from a set of 20" wheels that I used in the summer. Switching back to my stock wheels with the Firestones (I also used 265/70/17 instead of 265/65/17) improved my gas mileage compared to the 20" setup... I can only assume that your mileage may suffer a little if these tires are heavier than the ones you're current using.
