1998 braking thump and keyless entry ...

hi all -

i am a new owner of a 1998 pathfinder LE (2 wheel drive). i have 2 questions that concern me:

i have a low thump that happens when braking about 1/3 of the time. it feels like a late heavy downshift right before i come to a stop when i am going a little faster. any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

the car had no keyless remote when i bought it. i got an aftermarket one and was as far as getting the blinker to blink with key insertion, but that attempt failed. i only got that far once, since then i have not been able to get the car to blink to reset the code. can someone tell me where the receiver is? i have looked under the seats and cannot find it. or is it way under the carpet?

please help if you know an answer -
