The cam position sensor (sometimes referred to as a crank angle sensor) is integral of the distributor, as you mentioned. You may very well need to replace the distributor, but without doing the tests described in the service manual to confirm a bad distributor, it's only a guess. Couple of things you may want to check is for spark to the plugs, a worn or stuck center electrode inside the distributor cap, a loose rotor due to the bolt falling out, and making sure the rotor turns when you crank the engine (to check for a stripped or broken timing belt). If you have spark, you can check for a fuel delivery issue by spraying carb cleaner into the intake and seeing if the engine will start and run on the carb cleaner (it's less volatile than ether/starting fluid). If it runs on the carb cleaner, then you know it's a fuel delivery issue and not a spark issue.
