CB Radio

ALL,

Looking to see if anyone has installed a CB radio in their 05+ Pathfinder, and where did you install the components? Thanks.

Not sure if i'll be much help, but back before i bought mine (2 ish years ago) i looked at one that had one mounted in the flat almost tray like compartment above the Radio and Climate controls, but below the mirror. The one with all the little ridges in it.

I have an amature radio, a Yeasu FT857, it has a face off mount which I installed in the Sunglasses drop down. The Mic is tucked away down beteween the seat and handbrake when not in use.

Appreciate that you may not want to even consider a licence or that kid of expense but maybe there are some face off CB's out there.

My Radio is opened up so covers quite a few of the CB frequencies and PMR (every odd or is it even number channel - I forget)... not that I ever transmit on those frequencies of course (before someone pops along to give me a virtual slap

Does this radio require an antenna? If so, where did you mount it?

Yes I have a lip mount antenna bracket on the rear tailgate. It clamps on and does not have a need for holes in the bodywork. You can then use a quick release mount on the bracket or simply unscrew the antnna when not in use. I use a atas 120 antenna which isn't cheap but covers a huge number of bands and is designsed specifically for the radio I have.

For purely cb you can't go far wrong with a good old fashioned modulator antenna which sell cheap enough on eBay.

The link above shows a simialr set up to mine. Handy if you get stuck in the bush / desert. Every survivalist nutter should have one!

Do you happen to have some pictures of how your antenna and radio is mounted?

Also I'm still trying to figure out what the Yeasu FT857 is. Does it work like a regular CB? Would I be able to communicate with others that have a normal CB?

The FT857 is an Amateur Radio set, often described as a whole radio shack in a box. To use it you would need the local equivalent of an Amateur radio operators licence. It will if "opened up" (most specialist retailers will be able to do this or point you in the right direction) transmit on CB frequencies, but technically and legally this is a no no in most countries for licencing reasons and the type approval of the radio.

If its purely a CB you are after there will be much cheaper options out there, I'm sure someone else may be able to help if not here in the specialist 4x4 / offroad forums.
