I just wanted to thank everyone who posted information about the rear liftgate struts. Mine droopy liftgate was driving me crazy! I just installed the 200's from McMaster-Carr - Item number 9416k28. Someone on the forum reported having thread size issues on a 2011 Pathfinder, so I ordered 4 new 10mm ball sockets too. They're cheap, and I really wanted to get this done with minimal hassle. McMaster shipped my order right away, and the install took maybe 5 minutes. My gate swings up with purpose now! Goes all the way to the top, and isn't at all difficult to close. Maybe even lessens the slamming upon close.

Awesome!

So glad to have found this forum! Waiting for my struts to get here today. Can't wait to install them so when I'm putting groceries in the truck I don't get hit in the head with the tailgate (which is bad coming from someone who is 5'-0"). Will have to use the ladder idea as I won't have another set of arms to help. Thanks all for the great info! :D

Hey dashton,

What is the part number of the 10mm ball sockets you ordered?

I just swapped mine out with an OEM set I picked up a the dealership the other day. Took about ten minutes and they seem to work great. If they last four more years I'll be satisfied. I've yet to have an SUV that didn't go through the hatch hydraulics quicker than I expected. My wife's last Honda needed them the second year...but at least they were covered by warranty.

i have a 2006 pathfinder and need 2 rear hatch struts, can someone tell me which one i need from the mccaster.com website. I've been reading here that i should get the 250 psi struts. Do i need to buy anything else from that website to install the struts on my 2006 pathfinder?
thanks

175 psi is the rating of the stock struts. 250 psi will launch your rear hatch like nobody's business, but some have noted a little stress flexing at the mounting points of the strut. 200-225 psi seem to be more of a happy medium. If you want the 200 psi, try McMaster-Carr - Item number 9416K28. If you read this whole thread, you'll get all of the info you'll need!

Figured I'd throw my two cents in.

Was having the drooping gate, got tired of getting hit on the head so I ended up ordering StrongArm 6110 from Amazon. I've had them about 3 days now, and couldn't be happier. The gate is a bit harder to open (re: more effort to lift) but after about half way it does it's job well.

Just what I was looking for. Similar head banging (and hatch banging) experience for me.

Ordered 4 gas struts from McMaster Carr. $60. However, be careful that tax and shipping aren't quoted at the time of sale. Any idea how much they charge to ship to Texas?

Thanks Tzvier!!! 8) Recently noticed how the stock struts sucks when the temp drops down to single digits

Just replaced mine on a 05 SE with the McMaster-Carr 9416K149 225 force. Love the way it opens by itself now after opening it partially. I'm going to have to get used to using some force to close it though.

It's a relatively heavy liftgate. I have a 2011 I just bought. It was put into service October 2010 and with 38k on it the rear lift struts need to be replaced. I'll be taking it back to the dealer for a freebie. One of the benefits of a certified used car. I'll be milking Nissan for anything and everything the first month or so.

Finally purchased my set of McMaster-Carr 9416K28 rear hatch struts (200#). With shipping (GA to VA), they cost me $42 for the pair. A 17mm open end wrench worked well at removing the ball sockets from the old struts. 10 min job and love the results! I'll be happy not be be banging my head on the rear hatch come winter!
