Radiator failed 2008 PF 4.0 LE

Postby kneehurts » Sun Nov 03, 2013 6:29 pm

The radiator just failed on my 08. Seems like it's leaking from every seam. Luckily I did the bypass last winter. I understand no one has replaced their 08 + with an aftermarket unit? I was quoted 600 by the dealer I purchased the truck from to replace the radiator. 103k. Truck has smelled like coolant for a few thousand miles before obvious leaking started.

We've been told the AM units out there are plumbed for 2005-2007. I would imagine some minor mods would allow you to accommodate an AM unit, as the actual fitment should be fine.

Radiators are the same from 2005 models up to 02/2009 for V6 and V8 models. They were all P/N: 21460-EA215 (later superceded to 21460-9CA2E). At 02/2009, they changed part numbers to 21460-ZL11A (superceded to 21460-9CA0E). So, the later ones may be different.

So it's quite clear there's a transmission line plumbing difference starting with '08 models. Do you suppose the radiator is the same but the transmission fluid just flows the opposite direction through the radiator? If that's the case these aftermarket units might hook up fine. I thought the ports were in different locations but that may not be the case. I replaced my original 21460-9CA2E with a 21460-9CA0E and it was a perfect fit.

The difference between the 05-07 and the later models is that the auxiliary transmission cooler is mounted on the right side on the earlier models and on the left side on 08-and-later models. So, the routing of the cooler lines is different, but it's very possible the radiators are all the same; I know the radiators are the same in my 06 LE and 08 SE.
