seat heater and heated steering wheel

Postby doctahjones » Tue Nov 12, 2013 2:07 pm

how about creating another subheading in the r51 (and others?) for things that are and are not covered by warranty?

like today i took the pathy in because my steering wheel heater went out and the butt part of my drivers side seat heater doesn't seem to heat.

stealership...i mean dealership just called to say the butt heater is covered under my nissan extended warranty, but the steering wheel heater element (switch and fuse are fine, yeah i know that you idiots) that's -in- the steering wheel is out, and that is not covered under warranty. they also want to charge me $60 (1/2hr labor) for that diagnosis since it's not covered.

i asked well why didn't you look up whether it was covered before doing the diagnosis, he responded that they have to do that before they can check to see if it's covered. i told them exactly what it was doing, any idiot could deduce that the system was getting power (fuse) and the switch/relay was working fine (it clicks). obviously it's the element. smdh.

argued with the service guy that i didn't want to pay that, since it's not like he had to tear the car apart for 3 hours to figure out what was wrong. he said so you don't want to pay the service technician for his time? at no point when i dropped it off (and there was no $/h figure on the sheet i signed) did he say anything about an hourly. i said i would pay it, but after the seat heater is fixed then i won't be dealing with them anymore.

why is one covered and not the other?
i'd take a real close look at the extended warranty and it's exclusions
both are probably covered
I think it's also very peculiar that all of a sudden there are two problems, somewhat closely related, that happened at the same time
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the repair of one fixed the other also

it would really suprise me if the seat and steering wheel heaters were connected. i think it's more that the vehicle has 82kmi on it, and they're just wearing out.

as for the warranty part, supposedly they have a computer they can punch things into and it will tell them whether or not it's covered, like he did with my rear hatch supports (hey it was worth a shot).

and the fact that he could punch in the rear supports and find out if they were covered is something i'm going to bring up to see why he couldn't have done that with the steering wheel heater. i'm pretty sure they'll end up waiving the diagnostic fee, but it's the principle of the matter that nothing was brought up when i dropped it off about paying for anything, and that he couldn't have looked anything up before.

i wouldn't take their word for anything
did you get something like this when you bought your extended warranty?
https://owners.nissanusa.com/content/te ... ponent.pdf
this one is for later models (2013, I think), but you should have been given something like it when you got your extended warranty
it outlines what is, and is not, covered

i honestly can't remember. i mean i know i looked at a brochure that's similar to what you linked, but i put everything i got from the dealer into an envelope and into a fire safe. when i looked recently i don't have anything like that in there, just some loan docs.

on a side note i found out that the gap insurance i had was for the specific original loan i had, and since i've refinanced (my credit got way better, 3% drop in interest rate for the same remaining time) that gap policy is now void. however i'll be getting back a prorated amount of what i paid, so at least that's good....

.....as long as you're comfortable with that :)
for my own benefit, i'd like to know why they are willing to cover the butt heater but not the steering wheel heater

well, looking at that link you sent, the seat heater assembly is listed and covered, however i can find no reference to the steering wheel heater (element).

and when i got there i took out my wallet but the SA said that won't be necessary since he didn't inform me of the potential charges when i dropped it off.

then Nissan (not the dealer) needs to justify the dealers' decision on the steering wheel heater, or step up and foot the bill for the repair of it

Probably by law, they cannot charge you for anything that you did not agree to pay for beforehand
