I've been doing 9,000 using NAPA synthetic (rebranded valvoline) and the couple oil samples I've done look good. Two samples at 7,500 mile interval when I was still under warranty (max mileage per book) and the last one was at 9,000. Lab said to sample at 10k next time.Zen_master wrote:Next question... what is your oil change interval with the synthetic. I'm somewhere between 5,000-6,000 in the Jeep. The Acura has a maintenance-minder that often goes 9,000 or more before oil life is below the 10% threshold. Haven't had an oil change in the Pathfinder since switching to synthetic (just bought it in May).
I'm currently using Rotella T6 5w-40 after reading all the great feedback on all the other forums. Subaru crowd loves this stuff in particular. VQ40 does fine with it. Engine seems quieter as it is slightly more viscous than conventional 5w30 stuff dealer was putting in. The reason I switched to Rotella was that this oil consistently generates great UOA numbers with testing labs, it is cheap for synthetic and is always available at walmart. It also eliminates all the racket my engine makes with 5w-30 oil the dealer was using.volvite wrote:I'm going to bring this thread back to life. I've been using Mobil 1 in my Pathfinder since I bought it, Feb 2011. I just picked up a used 2006 Mazda Speed6 to replace my 91 Honda Prelude. On my Mazda forums, they swear by Rotella T6 5W-40. They claim...
"Shell Rotella® T6 5W-40 provides unsurpassed protection against shear-stability degradation, compared to the leading competitive API CJ-4 5W-40 products. An extremely shear-stable product helps maintain consistent viscosity and oil pressure in the engine.
YOUR PROTECTION - OUR EXPERIENCE"
I know there has been talk about our Pathfinder's timing chains wearing out fast and needing to be replaced.
Has anyone tried this oil before? Will the 5W-40 hurt our pathfinders? I believe it calls for 5W-30, so I don't think it would hurt our motors.
Thoughts?
What proof do they need of the oil change being done prior to 7,500? I prefer to perform my own oil changes. Is a dated receipt of a oil and filter purchase sufficient?skinny2 wrote:I've been doing 9,000 using NAPA synthetic (rebranded valvoline) and the couple oil samples I've done look good. Our Acura also goes 8k-9k miles and it's came loaded with 5w-20 conventional oil. I sampled first change (break-in oil) and it was fine at 8,500 miles. Amazing the quality of oil these days. I now run synthetic in it anyway and run the MID all the way to 0%.
Receipt for oil/filter and document the miles/date on the receipt. That would be adequate if there was an engine issue during warranty (which is HIGHLY unlikely).Zen_master wrote:What proof do they need of the oil change being done prior to 7,500? Great. Thanks for the post.skinny2 wrote:Receipt for oil/filter and document the miles/date on the receipt.
