rust on my nerf bars

hello everyone

ive noticed a little rust on my nerf bars, mostly on my driver side one. i thought it might have been some kind of dirt but i washed the car over the weekend and its still there. how can i get rid of it and what can i apply something to prevent it from rusting up again?

i finally found the website for the company that sell these nerf bars, or whatever they are called. it says they are stainless steel. looked up and found that vinegar can clean that rust stain.
