Diagnostic specialists out there??? yd25 issues......

Postby TJD NISSAN » Sun Apr 24, 2016 9:29 pm

Hey All,

I have a 2008 Pathfinder yd25 which went into safe mode while my wife was driving home last week.
She pulled over to the side of the road, it died, and hasn't started since.

I've tried the basics.....it isn't giving any fault codes, cleaned the injectors, drained fuel from the filter = zero water, released the exhaust to eliminate any back pressure blockage, cams turn and disconnected the cam sensor to troubleshoot a potential stretched timing chain, replaced oil and filter in case of oil pressure issues, and checked glow plugs ok.
an all be it weak mobile mechanic has assured me we have 2500 - 3500psi at the fuel rail.
So i'm pretty frustrated and stumped.
Any ideas or thoughts out there in forum land????

unfortunately you won't find much help here on the diesels.

how many sensors are there along the exhaust system?

Also, some people on this side of the pond have had this issue when their crank position sensor goes bad. No codes.

Sorry not more help.

You say no diag codes? And at the same time you say it went into limp (safe) mode. I doubt that very much.
Limp mode is triggered by ECU or TCM and event leaves so called Freeze frames and diag code. If no diag code, then it was NOT limp/safe mode, but it died mechanically, due to some physical reason.

Some YD25 engines are known to snap lower chain, which is single-row chain and can stretch and snap when you're over 150-200k...but not necessarily. But I guess crank position sensor would detect that....OR maybe not, because upper chain which lifts valves will still be in phase with main shaft.

Another fear is head gasket, head warping and I've heard also head cracking. Maybe you just lost a portion of head gasket and lost pressure in one of cylinders, thus the effect of "safe" or "limp" mode (running on 3 cyls only, lost power, not able to start anymore).

Open radiator cap and expansion tank and see, if you've got any oil or diesel there. Also check for coolant level in both, rad and expansion.

Does it sound normal when cranking? Any extensive vibration? (lower chain is connected to counter-balancer, so when snaps, it does not turn anymore)
BE CAREFUL - if chain snapped, oil pump is powered by lower sprocket and it will NOT GIVE YOU OIL PRESSURE ANYMORE. So trying too much might damage whole a lot of engine parts!
