Replaced fan clutch, now roar at startup?

Hi guys!

I replaced my visco fan clutch (of my '05 4.0 V6) last Sunday because it was continuously engaged when at operating temperature and therefore loud.

After replacing the fan is nice and silent once the engine is at operating temperature, but every single (cold) start of the engine it is fully engaged and it is extremely loud in the first 5 minutes of driving. Then is disengages and runs smoothly.

Now this is something I didn't expect to happen and it is very undesirable considering I leave early every day and my neighbors here in the Netherlands aren't very happy with this huge freightliner driving through their streets every morning

Is this something that has to break in or is this normal behavior?

You went with a cheap aftermarket part. The fan clutch, for whatever reason, is best bought from the dealer.

I've been down this road...

You think this behavior could be due to aftermarket?

If so I need to order a Nissan part!

Yes trade in your hovercraft motor for a quiet dealer part.

Thanks; I went to the local Nissan dealership over here in the Netherlands today and asked them for an OEM fan clutch. Guess what? They cost $590 over here! What?!?!?

So I just went ahead and ordered a genuine OEM Nissan fan clutch from a company in the USA including shipping and customs to the Netherlands. That way I paid $124 for the part and an additional $60 for the shipping and duty. Downside is that it arrives in 2 weeks...

Untill then I have to drive my hovercraft-when-cold

I ended up putting my old one back on. It was loud, but not that loud. You should be able to return the non-oem one as defective too.

Finally received my genuine Nissan fan clutch from the States and replaced the loud new aftermarket one. Unbelievable how quiet it is from the start; wow...

I was able to replace the fan clutch in under 30 minutes by not removing the fan shroud and all. I just removed the engine cover, intake, top cover of the air filter and removed the upper bolts of the fan shroud. Then I was able to push the fan shroud as far back as possible to get my hands in. There was just enough room to wiggle the fan blades out.

Also cleaned the MAF while I was under the hood. So I am happy!

Good to hear. I had the same experience with aftermarket parts. You get really good at this job after doing it 3 times for the same repair. Lol.

Why did your msf need cleaning? Never done mine. The sensor reads good on my scanner, seems accurate and consistent.

Yeah; I don't think I needed to clean it, but I am used to cleaning the MAF sensors in my vehicles after every year or so. Just a habit

The Nissan dealer. Worth the premium as the part I got actually worked, vs the one from autopartsway.ca. good company though, they accepted the return and did not charge freight back.
