R200 Rear ARB Locker

Postby aussie370 » Fri Mar 11, 2016 6:59 pm

I can just imagine everyone rolling their eyes when they read the title of this post ;)

Please bear with me while I try to explain.

My first and foremost priority was to have my 2008 V6 Pathfinder re-geared. I tow a trailer (3500#) and with bigger tyres it is sluggish to say the least.

Re-gearing to 4.10 was completed and a front locker installed.

The rear R200 was re-gear using C200K gears and a spacer and was successful.

Prior to installing the gears Steven at Rugged Rock did a lot of research and found out that the Nissan Patrol has a C200K front with IFS and there is a ARB locker.

Anyway a few emails back and forth with ARB and Steven, the consensus was that the locker should fit. Well it didn't, the clips are different. I'm not sure in what way, you will need to talk to Steven about that.

Well, it was decided to machine the locker to allow the clip on axle of the R200 to fit. Meticulous measurements were taken and the locker works.

Again, I don't have the measurements. I know Steven will be contacting ARB with what has been done.

If you are curious please contact Steven at Rugged Rocks.

PS. Yes I am one happy camper.

David

Dude. Awesome news! Look forward to seeing what Steve brings back. Have you tested it out at all? How do you like the 4.10 gears?

Thanks.

I just got back from CA. Hills that would cause the transmission to drop down a gear (highway driving) does not happen any longer and accelerates nicely up those hills. 😃

I did notice about a 250 RPM gain/increase at around 60mph. I'm not sure about the actual mpg on the freeway. With the 3" lift, roof rack, light bars etc the mileage sucked anyway.

The lockers themselves. The truck was taken out back of the shop where there is a small sandy hill. Both lockers were engaged and worked.

I haven't taken it off road as yet. I don't foresee any problems.

This is great news!!

Is the gear change necessary for the rear locker?
Or can we just machine our existing gears to pop in the ARB locker?

The ARB locker is designed for the C200K diff. A spacer is used to align the locker with the axle for the R200 diff

I would think you will need to change the gears. I'm not 100% certain. The lost of power was a big issue for me and I never wanted to keep the original gear hence the upgrade.

Contact Steven @ Rugged Rocks in CA He would certainly know what would be involved. (909) 547-4651

Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

So I looked up the ARB RD196 Rear C200K Air Locker and it says: Rear C200K 31 spline axle. All gear ratios!

"All gear ratios" is a good sign that it'll fit the stock gears in a V6 Pathy!

Time to call Steven!

And I got this in an email back from Steven today:

We did this build a few weeks ago now. The same setup should work just fine with other ratios.
Some modifications were needed to get the locker to work but we're willing to do more of these moving forward.

The axle shafts also need to be modified. (shorten on the inside by about 0.100")

Finally got the ARB Air Locker installed by my local shop!
I bought a dedicated ARB air compressor just for the locker and had them install it in the engine bay.

I haven't tested them off road yet, but you know I will!

There was a little extra machining that needed to be done.
We informed Steven @ RuggedRocks and he was gracious enough to pay for it since that was unexpected.
I don't know if the later model R51's are different then the earlier one's.
But it all worked out!!

What issues do you have with the front Lokka?
I still mine and it works fine.
The only con I have is that I can't use AUTO mode when I'm on the road.
Which is nice sometimes when it rains.

It was around 2K total, but well worth it.
When the Off Road Shop took my rear diff apart, the spider gears were all chewed up. So it was only a matter of time before that imploded!
Luckily the ARB replaces the whole internal gearing with forged parts meant to take some abuse!

I'll hopefully get out and wheel in the next month or so. 8)
