Need some help possibly from Nissan USA

Postby Suliman » Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:49 am

Here's the story...

I move overseas to Panama and bring my 06 Pathfinder here, since it seems like it's the #2 brand next to Toyota here.

Well, I have a Service Engine Soon light, so I wanted to run it over to the dealer to have them plug it in and find out what's up. No dice...

Panamoto (Transmistica, Panama City location), the Nissan dealer here in Panama has decided NOT to service or even diagnose ANY US spec Nissan vehicles. *bangs head*

Anyone have some Nissan Corp USA number I can call to see if they can help me out?

Do a self diagnostic yourself. This will give you the code(s) causing your problems. It's in the FSM on pages EC60-EC65 (around there). You should be able to find the FSM online if u don't have it.

Here is the low-down actually:
How to Set Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic Results)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the MIL starts blinking.
NOTE:
Do not release the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds if MIL may start blinking on the halfway of this 10 seconds. This blinking is displaying SRT status and is continued for another 10 seconds. For the details, refer to EC-57, "How to Set SRT Code".
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
ECM has entered to Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic results).
Your codes will now start blinking via the MIL light. The long pulses are your first number. 10 long pulses = number 0.

For example:

L L L L L L L L L L......S......SS......SSSSSS = (0126)

Keep in mind, if you have more then 1 code, it could get confusing. Just write the numbers as you see them come out, and you notice eventially you start repeating the same sequence. Post your code(s) here and I'll tell you what they mean.

What a PITA, it took me about 10 times to do it, LOL!!!!

Ok, I got:

9 slows
1 slow
4 quick
5 quick
5 quick

Do you think the 9 slows and 1 slow could be combined for 10 slows? There are only supposed to be 4 sets, and the first set (the slows) can only be a "0"(10 slows), "1" or "2".

Anyway, based on the info you gave me, looks like it's either:

0455 - EVAP GROSS LEAK EC-363
1455 - CODE DOES NOT EXIST

First thing I would do, is check the fuel filler cap. Make sure it's on tight. (if it is in fact 0455)

Here is the list of other possible problems which could trigger a 0455 code. You may want to run the diag. again and double check your code after making sure the gas cap is on tight.

+Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close.
+Incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve
+Incorrect fuel filler cap used
+Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap.
+Leak is in line between intake manifold and EVAP canister purge volume
control solenoid valve.
+Foreign matter caught in EVAP canister vent control valve.
+EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
+EVAP purge line (pipe and rubber tube) leaks
+EVAP purge line rubber tube bent.
+Loose or disconnected rubber tube
+EVAP canister vent control valve and the circuit
+EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve and the circuit
+Fuel tank temperature sensor
+O-ring of EVAP canister vent control valve is missing or damaged.
+EVAP control system pressure sensor
+Refueling EVAP vapor cut valve
+ORVR system leaks

The fuel cap was not loose, but it's been 3 tanks at least since the MIL was thrown and I only filled the last one. I think I'll try to do a reset on next tankfull and I'll see how it goes.

If it throws a code again (same) I'll try the evap and see if there's a loose fitting somewhere.

On the other note, anyone have some good numbers to reach Nissan at?

IIRC, P0455 is common when something interferes with the vent hose coming out of your evap canister. I got this a bunch of times last year on my 05, especially when it was raining. I cleaned the vent hose out, and no more issues.

Short of that, there is a vent control valve that can be replaced.

Also valid is the fuel cap tightness, I find that if I go to full serve gas, that I tend to get a code about a day later.

Been good lately though.... (fingers crossed)

Hey disallow, where's that EVAP vent hose. It's the tropics, so it rains every day and the standing water I have to drive through sometimes is about 1/2 - 3/4 the tire height.

Rear driverside wheel well-ish. There are some pics and posts regarding this, and a mod to put a filter on the vent hose in here somewhere. I'll see if I can find them.

Well, after about 3/4 a tank, light came on again...

Checked two things:
-Gas cap... I think it was actually loose. I told my wife to please make sure it's tight when she fills it up, lol.
-Evap vent hose... some dirt came out, blew that out. Should the actual evap canister be empty or full sounding when tapped? I assume Nissan uses a charcoal type canister?

Looks like if it comes back again, I'll be doing this one:
