I had my Maxima up to this a few years back. I've got huge injectors in it now, and so it "thinks" it's getting better than what it is since it has to correct a lot more.

Didn't get a chance to go anywhere over the 4th July weekend. So ended up spending all four days off running around town from store to store, Starbucks to Starbucks, restaurant to restaurant. All city driving, short hops in mild traffic. The 2012 PF gas mileage came in a 15.1MPG, not as good as I would like with the high cost of gas. Then again not bad for a SUV that can tow 6,000 pounds. The 2011 Honda Pilot we had for a year only got 15.3 city and it could even tow the tent trailer very well at all. I usually get about 18 to 19 MPG around town on a work week, not much traffic going into work at 4:30am each morning. Still getting around 21MPG on the freeway, so all in all my MPG is not to bad.
Today I decided to visit a sibling, 152 miles round trip, primarily 4 lane country state hwy. Last time I drove 50-55 and got 26.2 per dash. This time decided to do the trip at 47 mph on cruise and averaged 27.70 using same pump at start & finish. The dash said 27.1.
Sorta wanted to see what the PF would do should the country be under rationing like it was in WW2. Course, back then the national speed limit was 35. Don’t know if the officials can get by with that in today’s world.

That's all fine and dandy if one lives somewhere (east coast) where everything is close. I'd rather drive ~8 hours at 80mph (75 posted speed limit) to get somewhere instead of 55mph and ~12 hours of driving. The other thing to keep in mind is the speed limit & the fact that it can be dangerous for the person driving under the limit as well as for those who are driving the speed limit and need to get around the one who isn't.CPLTECH wrote: Here is what prompted the quest:

Wondering if anyone else has seen a drop in fuel economy the last couple of weeks. The weather in my part of the country has fallen off considerably and therefore it's taking longer to reach operating temperature. However, I'm not letting it idle to warm up or anything like that and driving patterns have not changed. MPG has simply declined about 1 mpg in the last month with the falling temps. Some have suggested it could be the switch to winter blend fuel which gets worse mpg than summer blend. Is this true?
Also, I've noticed my Pathfinder does not shift into overdrive until it reaches operating temperature. Is this normal?

Fuel consumption on a cold engine is pretty bad. I've had a scan gauge hooked up and until the engine hits op temps it really just drinks the fuel. Sucks but that comes with living in a cold climate. My avg overall has been sitting on 19mpg all summer and just yesterday it dropped to 18.9mpg. I'll get 18mpg during the winter assuming it's the same as last year. I have a heated garage at home so really I only see one very cold start a day.

With the 3lt V6 Turbo Diesel R51. Ti550.
I average about 9.6 liter/100 km = 24.50 mile/gallon (US)
But the best I've ever seen it is 7 liter/100 km = 33.60 mile/gallon (US). That was cruising, down a highway behind a freight truck.
Towing at a little over 3 Ton, I got 14 liter/100 km = 16.80mile/gallon (US). That's pretty much the worst I get, unless stuck in peak hour traffic, where the worst I've seen is 17 liter/100 km = 13.84 mile/gallon (US)
I guess with you guys having really cheap fuel, fuel economy isn't as important. but Diesel FTW!!!

What size are you thinking of going up to next? When I upsized from 295 to 325, I needed to get rid of my spacers because they (tires) just stuck out waaay too far, and I had a pet peeve in that they weren't filling up the inside of the fender enough, so basically they stuck out more than they filled meat near the strut, and I had plenty of room in there for more meats.akley88 wrote:i had my home made cross bars on the roof the other day. i used twice the amount of fuel to get the client then without them. i cant complain about my mileage with the 295s i still am averaging 16-19 mpg. cant wait till i can move up to 315s and see how the mileage goes.

First, does anyone know definitively if premium fuel (92/93 octane) has less ethanol per gallon than the lesser octane ratings? Internet research, for whatever it's worth, says a couple of states ban ethanol in premium but others permit it. Point being, ethanol of course has less energy per unit therefore ethanol free fuel blends would be preferred for maximum fuel economy.
Second, if we cannot get a definitive answer on the above, has anyone noticed a difference in fuel economy between fuel blends vis-à-vis octane ratings?
Lastly, I have an engine block heater on a different vehicle. These are great for myriad reasons. The most obvious are quick engine starts in extreme cold and rapid warm up of the radiator (translation: quick heat from the vents). Does anyone know if Nissan offers an engine block heater for the R51 -- particularly the V8 engine offering?
